To a brave woman I know putting one foot in front the other every day

We pretend to understand
We were not there
I wasn't there
You were
With your young children
Your mother your father your sister your niece
You were there

You saw the waters
Rise
Heard the snap and crash when the levies broke
You were there
Waited for rescue
None came soon

You waited
On rooftops
Holding babies
Stepping over grandmothers
Cooks and gardeners
Gone home to be with Jesus
Through water
Rising

Your own baby
Gone home to be with Jesus
Floated home to Jesus
Your family was relocated
Scattered across this beloved country of ours
This country of ours that let the levies break

We saw cracks
Heard rumors
Levies still broke
Babies still died
Your baby is with Jesus

You saw waters rise
Held onto hope to faith to love
To God
Left home without your sister
Without your niece
Without your baby

Held onto forgiveness
To sanity
To yourself

Your sister is not in Canada
Not in Utah
Not the Carolinas
Not Georgia

They found her body
Your sisters body
Under the crack of the levies
Your sister is with Jesus

We hold you
Sweetheart
Keep you in prayer
In love
In light
we hold onto hope with you/ to love/ to dreams/ to you
