A poem a day for 2013 - day 197 - The Talk

We teach our boys to be respectful
To make sure their hands are visible at all times
When confronted by police
To answer questions
To be aware
We did not teach them how to die
Strangers are not police
Stalkers in the night
Creeping slowly in a car
A man who does not identify himself
Who follows you
Is not your friend
Come home to us
Make it home
We never said lie there
Let a man pound the breath out of you
Run
Call for help
Get away
We tell our boys to come home to us
Fight
Pull
Kick
Free limbs from bondage
Scratch
Jab
Come home to us
Do not die
We tell our boys to live
Free yourself from his grab
Stomp
Pound
Pray
Come home to us
He was just following
Orders
