“A new world order is in the making, and it is up to us to prepare ourselves that we may take our rightful place in it...... The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.”
-- Malcolm X, early 1960s
What was the “new world order” that Malcolm said was in the making 50 years ago? In hindsight, it can be parsed from any number of perspectives. The clearest perspectives start with a factual recitation of the world as it was at the time that Malcolm made his observation—followed by a tracing of the developments in the world order from then to now.
This exercise provides a greater understanding of, and insight into, today's world order. This enhanced perspective on today's world order then allows for a reasoned projection of the trajectory of how the order of the world is being shaped going forward.
Then, with this reasoned projection of how the world is being shaped today for the future, individuals, families, and communities can begin now to better prepare themselves for the world order they reasonably see unfolding. The future then, indeed, “belongs” to them..in the sense that they have positioned themselves to best negotiate—and even influence—whatever future world order unfolds.
So, the second part of this exercise—after a recitation of the 1960s' world order and the ensuing developments that led to today's world—is a projection of today's world going forward. It is in this part of the exercise that it becomes crucial to know and understand the news of the day; but it is even more crucial to distinguish the news of the day with the “not news” of the day. The “not news” will be defined and described in this part of the exercise. It will be argued in the third and final part of this exercise that the “not news” is essential in the process of best preparing for the future by individuals, families, and communities.
The third part is then considerations on how individuals, families, and communities can best prepare themselves for the unfolding, projected world order.
