A poem a day for 2013 - day 64 - New moons

In the girls bathroom
On the big playground
I watched Balinda and Charisse
Put on lipgloss
Rub their tucked in lips together
To smear the shiny paint

Lynn's big sister taught her how to replace her
Shaved off eyebrows
With black pencil
Looked like half moon charcoal
Janice learned how to smoke the year before
When we were just fifth grade babies

We were women now
With tissue titties
Two pair of shorts under our skirts
Except for Marie
Who had her own big booty without the extra help
All the boys liked Marie

Long hair ran in Rosie's family
Green Eyes Tracy wore shirts that showed her stomach
My period had started the summer before
We were all grown women
The whole world at our feet

With our painted nails
And pretend boyfriends
Our fake smoking and
Kissing contests
Our dry hump partners
And hide go get it

Our French braids and flipped up bangs
Long pony tails with barrettes at the ends
Tube socks with our shorts
All us women
Grown as we could be
