I went to see the Brian Banks story with my mother tonight. I wrote in my journal this morning that I wanted to see it. For some reason I had the story confused with another one. I remember that he was falsely accused of rape but for some reason I thought the accuser was a white girl. I guess because white women's tears are fucking everywhere and I don't know why, but I put them in this story too. No, the accuser was a black girl.
They were in high school and were in a hallway kissing and making out when a teacher or some adult opened the door and disturbed them. The adult didn't see them but the door opening made Brian come to his senses and cut out the make out session. The accuser, whose name in the movie was Kanisha, but that was not her real name, was approached by a security guard as she was on her way to class. She didn't want to get in trouble and long story short, Brian was accused of rape. Fuck.
This young man, this boy really, was a great football player and had a shot at college and maybe going pro after was sent to jail. He did about five or six years then had to register as a sex offender when he was released. Just stop and imagine this. Imagine being his mother sitting in the courtroom knowing your child is innocent, watching him being taken away and sent to live with men who could do harm to him. Imagine even being Brian. The fear, the anxiety, the day to dayness of violence and nearly losing your mind. Then being out of jail and living in and having to function in a system that you know not only doesn't want to survive but is rooting for you to fail.
You can Google this story to find out the outcome. I also suggest you see the movie. I thought the young man who played Brian Banks did a good job. I especially related to Sherri Shephard who played his mother. Those were some real ass tears. I hate that we live in a world were our children can just be sent to prison like that. The girl who accused him of rape did admit, years later...after he was released from prison, that he did not do it. She and her family were rewarded over a million dollars from the state so no, she didn't admit that in front of the judge. Just...see the movie. That is if you can stand seeing that on a big screen. It's hella triggering. It's hella scary because this shit happens all the time. Our babies! God bless our babies!
