Having something to look forward to is sometimes a matter of life or death. And whatever it is we are holding in front of us as motivation to keep moving does not have to be this great mountain. It can be something as small as looking forward to wearing that new pink skirt next week. When I was back in Georgia I was seeing this guy. I remember once we were sitting on my couch and somehow started talking about ROOTS, by Alex Hailey. Now if you've never read the book ROOTS know that the first half of the book is such an amazing story. I mean really. Africa, grandmothers, Baobob trees, fathers, men. Beautiful. What if they made a movie of that? Anyway, he had never read the book and I had it in my bookcase. I read him a chapter and he loved it. I just read the first chapter. I said I would read to him a chapter everytime we were together. Only halfway teasing. He smiled and said "Wow, that must mean you really like me because that's a really big book."
As it turns out we didn't see each other beyond chapter three but that statement was profound to me. Something to look forward to, you know. And no, our "seeing each other" didn't end because of the reading or the book. We Facebook "like" each other to this day. My point though, looking forward to something. Have something. A child graduating, a birthday, seeing someone smile, finishing a story in a journal. Something. Create it.
