Page (2)

The thoughts gallop through her mind speeding her gait. She finds herself at her front porch before she knows. She wonders how she missed the children playing in the schoolyard. Wonders if she spoke to Mr. Luther, the man three doors away who is always sitting on his porch this time of day. And the roses? Did she even notice Miss Carrie's roses? She walks inside and goes straight to the kitchen. Puts her bag in the chair near the table then opens the fridge.

"That you, Page? Page is that you? Page?"

"Yes, Rock it's me!" She shouts to her older brother. Because who else would it be? She thinks to herself. Page takes the clam chowder soup out of the fridge and pours it into a pot to heat it up on the stove. She finds herself staring out of the window again like she did on the bus. This time she looks out of the kitchen window onto the backyard. Her trance is broken when she hears the soup overheating.

"How's clam chowder for lunch today?" She asks as she sets the hot soup on the tv tray next to his hospital bed.

"Sounds alright." Rock says wth no expression. "Any applesauce in there?"

"Yeah I'll go get it. You need help in the bathroom first?"

"No, I'm good."

Page leaves the room then returns with a fruit cup of orange slices. "No applesauce but there's this."

"Whatever."

"Yeah. Whatever." Page goes to her room and closes the door.
