Vida pulls up in front of Fresh Kutz in Compton. She lets the DJ Quick song finish before she gets out of her car. She walks through the shop to her booth and speaks to the other barbers. "What it do, y'all?"
"Sup, V?" Marques speaks back. The others nod their heads.
"Come on." She motions for Tyrel to come back to her chair.
"Hey, Vida. I like those Pumas." Tyrel says.
"Thanks, man. You know I try to stay fresh."
"Try nothing, you do stay fresh." They both laugh lightly.
"What's going on in school?" Vida asks as she puts a black cape over him to keep the hair off of him.
"Weeeelll???"
"What's goin' on?"
"College is different. I know it's just city college but it's different. The people are hard to get used to and I feel like I have to start all over. Even with the people I knew from high school." Tyrel responds.
"Yeah I guess you're right. But you gotta remember everybody is feeling like you."
"No they're not." Tyrel shakes his head. "I know they're not feeling like me. And now that some people know I'm out there's no going back in. Not that I would do that anyway but it's hard for all the regular reasons plus the way people deal with me. Especially my old friends. Not my old friends. They weren't my friends. Just people I knew."
Vida stands in front of Tyrel and looks at him in his face. "Listen, I need you to hang in there, okay? You have any problems, you ever want to talk, you ever want somebody to listen to you, you call me. You come in here and we'll talk. We can go somewhere. Whatever. You hear me?"
"Yeah I do. I hear you."
Vida's phone rings. "Let me call you back, P okay?"
